Following the release of his latest single ‘EDM Mockney’, we sat down with Benedict Sinister to find out more about his music, influences, and future plans.

Hey there, how are you?

Fan-bleedin-tastic Gov’na! And that’s not only because I just hoovered up a few lines of Peggy.

We have just entered 2022, how is the year going so far for you?

The cancellation of both Davos and The Hills: New Beginnings left a heart-shaped gap in my schedule. I’m missing partying with my Discord crew Greta Thunberg and Rodrigo Duterte at the World Economic Fuckfest – and I also lost my gig as Justin Bobby’s wingbro number two.

What does the release of this new single mean for you?

We’re unleashing EDM Mockney at such a perfect moment – just five and a half months before the festival season starts! We just finished the remix and it’s going to reinvent the EDM landscape (and adjacent campsites) from Hradec Králové to Gdynia-Kosakowo!

What inspires you and who are your influences?

I am inspired by nature, to stay the hell away from it. I’ve seen nature’s terrible cruelty and indifference to life – the horrific deaths suffered by animals in the wild – and so I want to make sure my own life is as far as possible from how nature intended it.

The question about my influences is one I don’t get often. Probably because I name my influences in my songs more than any artist in the history of popular music. But for the benefit of your readers, here are a few influences I haven’t specifically referenced in any recordings yet: Nina Hagen, Yukio Mishima and Porfirio Rubirosa. As Q says, do your own research…

Why have you chosen to hide your identity? What inspired you to perform in a mask?

Like most children I first started wearing a mask at that special once-a-year celebration of spooky costumes and over-indulgence – in my case, Burning Man. I had such a shameless good time wearing it, I decided to keep it on in civilian life. But I can’t actually perform wearing a mask – at least not oral.

What’s next for you in 2022?

Sundance obviously, where I’ll be DJing Lorenzo Lamas’s 65th birthday at a secret VIP venue in the basement of Boneyard. Then on to the Ice Polo World Cup in St Moritz. After missing Davos, I’m longing to hit the snow with my friends – after they finish ski-ing, of course.
