Tell us about your show. Why should we go and see it?
My show is called The Girl Before The Girl You Marry. It’s broadly about love and relationships (a subject I don’t think has ever been covered before in any medium) and it’s specifically about ex partners getting married SUPER EFFING QUICKLY ACTUALLY after you’ve broken up. I feel like a human property developer- getting them all nice and ready for the next tenant to immediately want to sign a lifetime contract and start a family.
Are you flying solo or are you part of a team?
This will be my first solo show (gulp) but I am also there with my double act The Delightful Sausage. We were nominated for the Best Show Award in 2019 and now we are desperate to prove it wasn’t a fluke or an admin error.
What are your hopes and dreams for the Fringe?
I really want people to come to my show and to have a good time. That’s it. I feel like I’m throwing a birthday party twenty-odd days in a row and the anxiety that people might not come or enjoy my spread is anxiety inducing.
What makes you laugh?
I’m in an M&S cafe (yeah, I’m doing alright) and I’ve just been staring at my screen, trying to answer this for ages. It’s so tough. Not because I’m hard to please but because I absolutely love a good cackle. An older lady in the booth behind me is referring to WhatsApp as ‘WhatsAppening?’ and I’m thoroughly, thoroughly enjoying it.
What is it that made you a performer?
I’m the youngest of seven. That’s everything you need to know.
How will your audience think/feel differently after an hour in your company?
Uplifted and like they’ve spent an hour with a mate and got some really juicy gossip.
Whose show – apart from your own – are you looking forward to seeing at the Edinburgh Fringe?
So many! Helen Bauer, Leo Reich, David Callaghan, Harriet Kelmsley, Jordan Brookes, Sunil Patel, Nick Helm, Esther Manito… and my double act partner Chris Cantrill is doing his show ‘The Bad Boy’ at Monkey Barrel which I’ve seen in preview and can’t wait to see the finished thing / see if I get a mention.
What’s the most useful piece of advice you’ve been given?
If you’re not enjoying it, how do you expect the audience to? Also – comfortable shoes.
Do you have a favourite Fringe memory?
I once caught the end of my friend’s show through a window in a door. It was going so badly he was just laid on the floor in silence. He then crawled to the door where I was, I surprised him with a thumbs up and we laughed for about 45 minutes as the audience left baffled. For me that just really encapsulated the festival.
Who is your showbiz/Fringe idol and why.
I was lucky enough to meet Liza Tarbuck on the set of Hypothetical and she is the warmest, funniest, classiest, most supportive person I’ve met. VIVA LA TARBUCK!
