Brennan Reece has arrived at the Fringe with a refreshingly honest show. The honesty partly stems from the sometimes serious content, but it mainly comes from the simple fact that he felt too burnt out to really write a show and so he kept putting it off. Comedians can be relatable without getting down to the nitty gritty in their own lives, Brennan Reece has managed to do that, but he’s also peppered in the latter.
“Crowded” is about lockdown in a sense, but not in the way you might be thinking. Most comedians have spoken about lockdown in the sense of what happened to them during that time, how they handled it, how the country handled it etc. but this is different. Brennan Reece is more focused on how it was the catalyst of him removing himself socially and isolating himself, which was a dark time for him. But now he knows what he needs to do in order to start feeling good again, he needs to socialise like he never has before, meeting people from all over with different backgrounds and stories to tell. What’s the easiest way to do that when you’re a comedian? Get your audience to talk about themselves.
The show is heavily dependent on audience interaction, but even if that is not the type of show you would usually go for, it is incredibly entertaining. Audience members are given a card with a question on it, the answers are put up on a board and you get to find out what people have been up to, some of it is information you may have rather not known.
You do also get to hear Brennan Reece’s material, with plenty of jokes about his dating life, getting older and how he is trying to find his place in comedy. He’s quick, cheeky, and immensely funny. If you are looking for a fun night out at the festival, this is definitely one to put your name down for.
