The Funny Women Awards Gala Final is set to take place at London’s Bloomsbury Theatre on September 29, hosted by Thanyia Moore. Sponsored by Sky Studios, the awards will also be streamed online via Next Up Comedy.
Originally created in 2003, the Awards have been a vital launch pad for many talented performers. Past Awards alumni include Katherine Ryan, Jayde Adams, Roisin Conaty, Sarah Millican, Sara Pascoe, Zoe Lyons, Bridget Christie, Susan Calman, Sindhu Vee, Rosie Jones, London Hughes, Desiree Burch and Game of Thrones actress Gemma Whelan.
This year, the ten Stage Award finalists have been chosen from over 450 entries. The finalists are Anshita Koul, Fathiya Saleh, Jessie Nixon, Julia Stenton, Kate Martin, Leah Davis, Lorna Rose Treen, Marjolein Robertson, Sharlin Jahan and Tatty Macleod.
The Stage Award finalist will not be the only person to be crowned, with four other Funny Women Awards to be presented on the night too. Each winner of the Awards will be awarded £1000 each.
The Comedy Writing Award, sponsored by Sky Studios, will be choosing the winner from these three finalists. Magical Extinction- Ruby Carr; Wasteland – Nicki Lucas; Beth’s Din – Ellie Silver. Sky Studios is offering development support for the winner.
The Comedy Shorts Award, supported by London Short Film Festival, is pleased to announce that the top finalists for 2022 are Lorelei Mathias – Creative Writing; Lorna Rose Treen – My Entertainment Badge and Sarah Grant & Katrina Allen – New Mum’s New Toy. The winner will be announced at the Gala Final. The winner will be awarded a screening at the London Short Film Festival. The Shortlist for 2022 can be viewed here.
The Funny Women Industry Award, supported by Comedy 50:50 and The Comedy Crowd, was created to recognise the women amongst the unsung heroes of comedy – the gag, sketch and additional material writers, and the producers, developers and creators who are at the forefront of television, radio and digital entertainment. This award has been nominated by industry figures and will be presented on the night. They will join Sophie Duker (Winner 2021) and Christine Rose (Winner 2020) who have overcome the disproportionate barriers to entry to succeed in this highly competitive field.
