A Wednesday evening, deep in a crypt adorned with a curtain with stains “you don’t get just anywhere” the host is at pains to thank the Museum of Comedy for her glamorous set for which she assures us there was no expense spared on the table and tablecloth that housed her pint of, what she claims, is straight vodka. Entering to the unforgettable rhythms of Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You’ Supergirly arrives in a full tutu’d, Union Jack, sequined sensation of a costume and the tone is well and truly set for this romp through nineties classics with her parody spin.

Sending up not only the songs of the time but also the culture; the boybands, the girlbands, the dating world, we’re transported back to a time of brit pop, ladettes and balls-to-the-walls drinking culture of the nineties which thankfully was redeemed by the iconic music. Spice Girls, All Saints and Westlife, Supergirly mocks the dance moves and the paint-by-numbers of another Steps song whilst conceding its undeniable irritating catchiness – an unarguable truth which has landed them on every guilty pleasure wedding playlist of the last 20 years.

James Blunt’s ‘You’re Beautiful’ is delivered as a slurred declaration on a nightclub floor whilst an incredible regret-filled post one-night stand version of ‘It’s All Coming Back To Me Now’ shows Supergirly’s incredible abilities as a vocalist.

Ending with an encore embracing her Australian roots, Supergirly donned a light up headdress giving it all an air of a new beauty queen taking her crown – what could be more nineties than that. But for Supergirly this is a returning lap of honour. Having previously delighted Mel C, Elton John and scores of other superstars back in a time when “Will didn’t know Grace”, today’s audience can expect to leave with a re-invigorated love of songs you thought you’d forgotten delivered in the fun, sequined, outrageous, garish way the nineties intended.

Supergirly: Back to the Noughty 90s is at Museum of Comedy on various days between 7th – 15th July www.museumofcomedy.com @therealsupergirly
