André de Freitas brings a taste of his home country Portugal to the Fringe, as he tells the story of how and why he left.
He creates laughs as he discusses differences in cultures and languages and how it affects his dating life, how he’s had to adapt to the culture in Britain and how he had enough faith in himself to go against what his parents were saying and follow his dreams.
De Freitas has a certain sarcastic charm which helps keep his jokes fresh and entertaining. His stories are very relatable to a range of age groups keeping both young and old laughing along with him. I found some moments lacked excitement and the storytelling was getting lost, with some of the anecdotes being so strong it created a greater contrast when some parts didn’t deliver to that same calibre.
This show shows the realities of moving away from everything you know because you just know you are destined for something more and the hardships you may face along the way. De Freitas does this in a comedic way but that doesn’t hide how difficult his journey has been for him. This show is although funny, very touching. I was left with a real warm feeling in my chest and excitement to push for the things I want no matter what life throws at me and it seemed much of the room felt the same way.
