Tell us about your show. Why should we go and see it?
This year’s show is called Bennett Arron: Loser. I look back on my life, literally from birth to now, and by the end decide if I am one of life’s winners or losers. (Spoiler Alert – there’s every chance I’m a loser)
What are your hopes and dreams for the Fringe?
My hopes are for people to come along and enjoy the show. It’s my fifth solo show and I think it’s the best one I’ve done. My dreams are that I’m abducted by aliens, taken to their planet – which is full of crisps and beer – and crowned as their leader. But then I get overthrown and locked in a castle. I really shouldn’t eat cheese before going to bed.
What makes you laugh?
Being tickled. And cat videos.
What three words best describe your performance style – and why.
Self-deprecating, funny, engaging, rule-breaking.
How will your audience think/feel differently after an hour in your company?
I think they will look at their own lives and suddenly feel a lot happier.
What kind of shows – apart from your own – are you looking forward to seeing at the Edinburgh Fringe?
I have a lot of comedian friends performing this year. It’s going to be difficult to find excuses not to see any of them. But I’ll try.
The cost of living is a big issue this year – will it make this Fringe more challenging?
I have decided to perform at PBH’s Free Fringe again this year. I love the concept end ethos of pay-what-you-want at the end. Many of the large venues charge a lot of money for performers and for audiences, so this is a perfect way of performing at the fringe. It’s very expensive to take a show to the festival so I’m hoping people will be generous. I will also be giving twenty per cent of profits to Alzheimer’s Research.
What do you predict will emerge as the big themes of this year.
People being “Brave”.
Who is your showbiz idol and why.
I don’t really have an idol. The people I laughed at growing up were Morecambe and Wise, Tommy Cooper, Kelly Montieth and my Dad.
What is your idea of a perfect Fringe moment?
Meeting up with friends I haven’t seen for years and pretending we haven’t aged.
