Tell us about your show. Why should we go and see it?
It’s a joy-filled mashup of comedy, empowerment, and science meant for the whole family to enjoy together. With 30 years of comedy experience and 19 of being a dad, I’m driven to make the show a rousing event for everyone in the house. And not just the kids, I sometimes do shows just for adults. I promise you, you will laugh whoever you are.
What are your hopes and dreams for the Fringe?
I’m in a big space, 300 seats! Last year (my first) I hit over 200. I’d love to have some sold-out shows now that people are starting to understand what I do.
What makes you laugh?
The absurd, and characters who inadvertently create their own comeuppance.
Also, chickens. I mean, look at ‘em!
What three words best describe your performance style – and why.
Character-driven improv comedy. Is that four? Hyphens don’t count!
I created the character first. I wanted the comedy to come from a place of honesty, and that means the character has to live their own truth. Several festivals allowed me to do some interactive street work, and I found him through that process. Every laugh comes from Doktor Kaboom interacting with the world and people around him.
How will your audience think/feel differently after an hour in your company?
They will have a brighter, shinier outlook on life and the world in general. They’ll be sharing moments from the show for months.
What kind of shows – apart from your own – are you looking forward to seeing at the Edinburgh Fringe?
I love a great comedy ensemble piece. Also imaginative reworkings of classic theatre, and I’m a HUGE fan of professional street performers!
The cost of living is a big issue this year – will it make this Fringe more challenging?
I’m sleeping backstage in another show’s wardrobe. Got a great deal, though, only 4k!
What do you predict will emerge as the big themes of this year.
Orange lab coats, chrome goggles, and vivacious German accents.
Who is your showbiz idol and why.
Every single performer, writer, director who has the desire and steps up to do whatever it takes to put their work on display. Anywhere.
What is your idea of a perfect Fringe moment?
Wow! So many options for this one. Last year near the end of a show, a child six or seven years old (a bit young for my show but engaged nonetheless) raised his hand. I generally don’t respond, but he was adamant and I have no fourth wall, my show is a running conversation. So, I stopped what I was doing and asked him what his question was. He stood up and proudly stated, “I know how to spell horse!”. I said, “Well, let’s hear it”. He spelled it, and the entire audience erupted into applause.
