In the beautiful venue of Assembly City Hall the stage is set for a magical hour of ballet and movement.
Kyiv City Ballet were on tour performing the Nutcracker when the war in Ukraine begun and have been unable to go back since. Despite these difficult circumstances they have been keeping up with training and touring the world.
Although there seems to be no end in sight for the war in Ukraine, this show chooses to think of the positives and honouring the good in the world. With stories of love and moments of comedy this show is perfect for the whole family and a light touching piece of ballet.
These young dancers all get their moments to shine, with solos and pas des deux throughout showing not only stories of love but also of friendship and how we must help each other in difficult times. Some points in the show also had men partnered together, showing us that all love is valid and important.
Through a mixture of classical ballet and more contemporary movement, the piece left audiences wanting more. This mix of different styles is something we rarely get to see and to have it alongside a story so beautiful was truly special.
The highlight of the show was the traditional Ukrainian folk dance ‘Men of Kyiv’ a lively and energetic dance which had the audience clapping and cheering along. A show of skilful movement, high leaps, floor work and playful performance this dance is a joyful yet emotional moment as they honour their home city of Kyiv.
