Based in Nashville, Tennesse, Nick Brown (aka MONA) is a US vocalist, songwriter and producer. The band exploded into the music scene after appearing as part of the BBC Sound of 2011 poll and went on to win the Brand-New Act award at the MTV Awards the same year.
Following the release of MONA’s self-titled, self-produced debut album, they went on to tour the world at festivals including Glastonbury and Coachella, as well as support Kings of Leon on selected days of their summer tour.
We ask some quick-fire questions to MONA, to check out what they’ve been up to recently and their break into the music industry.
What motivated you to get into music?
It was always there in my head.. I don’t think I had much choice!
Where does the name MONA come from?
My grandmother.
In 2011, you won the Brand-New Act award at the MTV awards. Is this what sparked your career?
No, and I actually forgot that happened haha!
You’ve performed on a few TV shows like Tonight with Jools Holland. What were these experiences like?
Amazing! That sparked my career more for sure, and the experience was exciting. I love that setup and being able to perform with other great artists.
Touring at festivals and supporting high-profile bands must be one career highlight so far, who did you most enjoy touring with?
Each tour has its own lessons. As long as it’s good people then I’m not that concerned with the high profile.
What is the best and worst part of touring?
Same answer for both. It’s an alternate reality.
This year you released a new single ‘Nothing is Dead’. Can you tell us about this track?
Simply put – everything has seasons, and then repeat.
Will you be releasing any more music this year?
Another single in September, another in November, and an album called ‘Smiley Creatures’ in January.
When are you next touring?
I’ve been touring in the States. More coming soon…
