Dutch duo ‘Pol’ have released their brand new and highly anticipated self-titled debut EP. Pol is made up of brothers Ruben and Matthijs and their latest 5-track delivering brings New Wave to the forefront again with their take on the genre.
The lead single from the EP ‘L’Amour Fait Mal’ resonates with this sound, creating a rich layering of textured synth lines and driving drum beats that sit behind a characteristically wistful vocal performance, completing the track. Speaking on this latest release, Pol states “’L’Amour Fait Mal’ is a harmonious blend of upbeat energy and poignant melancholy, encapsulating the essence of a new-wave love song.”
The brothers were influenced by their own personal experiences while writing the EP, examining personal challenges such as dealing with toxic masculinity, as well as the complexity of relationships with those they’re close to. Behind a backdrop of their alluring new wave sound Pol weave elements of post-punk and glam rock to create compelling compositions that are individual to them.
Speaking more about the EP Pol explains, “Many of the songs carry deeper personal meanings beyond their initial simplicity. This emotional journey has been both heavy and rewarding, as we refused to settle for anything less than our best (with our current capabilities).”
Pol has released three singles from the EP so far, ‘Comme Ça’, ‘Boys Are’ and ‘Modern Strange Love’, which have gathered praise from the likes of Vogue Netherlands, CLASH Magazine and Record Of The Day to name a few while achieving over 1 million streams on Spotify. Beyond music the two brothers channel forms of expression from their work in the high-fashion industry, modelling for various fashion houses (including Saint Laurent, Gucci, Fendi, Valentino, Dior). With the release of their debut EP, Pol looks to capitalise on their previous success as they aim to bring their own brand of new wave to the masses.
