Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter ‘Darrin James’ has just released his latest single ‘When You’re With Me’. The Ann Arbor, US-based musician, composer and producer is popularly known for his distinctive gravelly voice, thoughtful lyrics, soulful musicianship, and eclectic production style, which is a combination of the electric and gritty sounds of blues and rock and the acoustic, rootsy elements of Americana.
Darrin’s latest single ‘When You’re With Me’ is a perfect reflection of his sound. An upbeat single filled with heartfelt lyricism that’s centred around an acoustic guitar riff, driving drums and honky tonk-inspired piano lines that pair well with Darrin James’ gruff vocal performance.
Speaking about the track Darrin James explains “When You’re With Me is a sweet, upbeat alt-country love song, but below the surface, there is a sense of nostalgia and sadness and a sense that something has been lost.”
Originally hailing all the way from Kentucky and raised in Metro Detroit, Darrin James has previously released three critically praised albums under the name ‘Darrin James Band’ before opting to go by ‘Darrin James’; Thrones of Gold (2006), The Lovely Ugly Truth (2009) and Strange Storm (2016), with some of the music finding its way onto TV and film such as Discovery Channel’s Deadliest Catch and the 2019 film, ‘Peel’, starring Emile Hirsch. Darrin has also previously released music under the moniker ‘Disaster Relief’, collaborating with Detroit’s ‘Queen of the Blues’ Thornetta Davis’ on two singles ‘Not so Scared of You’ and ‘How I Feel’ which was nominated for two Detroit Music Awards in 2021. With the release of ‘When You’re With Me’, James now looks ahead to his forthcoming album which promises a more personal selection of songs inspired by Darrin’s experiences accompanied by his characteristic gritty arrangements.
