The United Kingdom (UK) ranks in the top 10 globally for health and fitness app downloads, according to new data.

Over the past five years, the popularity of health and fitness apps has grown significantly. Since Covid-19, consumer use of such applications increased by 44% worldwide, and in 2023 alone, download rates were recorded at being 2 billion more than in previous years.

Now, data analysis provided by Healthnews has determined that the UK ranks number 6 in the top 10 nations for health and fitness app usage globally. See results below:

The UK garnered 68,695,503 total downloads last year, averaging at approximately 1.036 downloads per internet user.

European nations dominated, with Portugal claiming the top stop with 1.29 app downloads per internet user in 2023. France and Belgium followed with a noticeable preference for walking and outdoor navigation apps respectively.

The analysis also showed a prevalence of health and fitness apps in Singapore and Korea.

Data usage was collected using AppTweak, which extracted download statistics from the 200 most popular iOS and Android apps — both free and paid for — from within the ‘Health and Fitness’ category worldwide.

The ratio of downloads to internet users was then calculated across 50 countries to determine the ranking.

Overall, the period tracking app, Flo, emerged as the most popular application in 2023 with nearly 21 million downloads worldwide.
