This show is one for the gifted kids turned burnouts. Gay tells the story of her innate perfectionism in childhood and how it continued to haunt her in her professional life.

From a young age, Gay attributes her love for PowerPoint presentations to her parents, she explains how her dad’s love for stoicism inspires her to become successful in the tech field. However, Gay quickly realizes that her entry-level position in a tech start-up is more toxic than she imagined.

Although some of the sales-focused jargon might be lost on those not in the field, Gay still manages to reel the audience in with hilarious skits and effortless humour.

What goes hand-in-hand with perfectionism is the ability to overthink. Gay transports the audience to a time when she experiences stress-induced hair loss over worrying about whether she will receive a promotion or get fired after a vague series of events leads her to believe that either one is possible at the dreaded meeting on the second floor. During her time of overthinking, Gay compares herself to her overly high-achieving colleagues and the crazy things they do just to reach the top.

Gay’s show resonates the most with those who admit that they are and always will be a Rachel Berry girl, who would do anything for a gold star.

Alexis Gay: Unprofessional, 16.20, Underbelly, Until August 25
