I always find it hard to properly talk about the shows I really love. What is there to say, other than you need to pay money to see them asap?
Fringe veterans Al Roberts Liam Williams and Daran Johnson (Jonno) have come back together for their final Fringe run together. Considering this is the first time I’ve been to see them, I’m more than a little miffed.
Theirs is a sketch comedy set consisting of a series of increasingly wacky scenarios which have the whole audience howling. The Sheeps’ success lies mainly in their mastery of tension building. They know exactly how to set up each sketch to have you anticipating their next move and dying while you wait for it to play out.
The range of scenes and characters in their sketches is impressive- with a particular shout out to one I won’t give away too much of but contains the best Keir Starmer impression I’ve heard. It’s all too easy for them, that’s how it feels when you watch the show. It makes other comedians’ jokes seem laboured by comparison.
I’m fairly new to sketch comedy. I think I was a bit biased previously, only thinking of old YouTube sketches I had seen- none of which cut any kind of mustard. I can now say with confidence that I’m looking forward to seeking out more sketch acts in the future. I hope they can live up to the Sheeps’ memory. RIP Sheeps. You will be missed.
