Christy Ċ has attracted plenty of attention on the UK dance scene since his first release Ocean, which has been followed by ‘Everything I Need’ and ‘Closer’.
Here he talks about his latest EP – and tells us why he can’t tell us about his first gig – which was on a superyacht, somewhere in the Antarctic.
How did your musical project first start? Is there a story to tell about it?
It started with a broken coaster, that fell off my studio monitor speaker as I was first experimenting with writing drum & bass tracks. Yes, a mug coaster – the bass got the better of it. It had the letter C on it (for Christy, of course), in sort of a bronze colour/texture. I was genuinely gutted when it had dropped on to my desk and cracked into pieces – but I was feeling creative. I picked up all the parts and taped it all back together at the back of it and it looked pretty cool – this gave the inspiration to what is now my logo. The Ċ in “Christy Ċ” represents this cracked coaster, my logo, and the start of my path to bringing liquid drum & bass elements into my music.
What was your first gig?
Actually, and unfortunately, I can’t disclose much about what my first gig was as I had signed an NDA – all I can say is that it was in Antarctica, for a NYE party, on a yacht, and it was awesome. I honestly wish I could give you guys the full story, it was a mad “pinch me” moment. Maybe some time in the future it will come out…
How has your music been received by fans?
It’s been incredible how many comments and messages I get from people appreciating my music, and I’m honestly just so appreciative of every one of them. The feedback from listeners, professionals and the media has been inspirational. The reason I’m releasing music in the first place is to share my excitement and passion of music through it, and to receive acknowledgement of this is something special. This, along with the reach of my music continuously growing, gives me even more drive to have my music reach out to more people.
What three words best describe your musical style and why?
Inspired, emotive, hybrid. “Inspired” seems like a bit of a generic word, as all music is inspired somehow, but it really is the sort of base layer of whatever style is created. Objectively I suppose, my primary goal with the music I make is to essentially converge all of my favourite styles of music into my own. Whatever excites me, regardless of genre or style, will be conveyed through my own music.
Who are your biggest musical influences?
I find this a tough one to answer actually, as there are so many, but I have been especially inspired over the years by Porter Robinson. His pretty dynamic journey has been incredible to watch, and you get that sense of raw emotion and energy through his music that I find so thrilling. Two more artists that have especially inspired me and that I can’t miss out here are Feed Me and Hybrid Minds.
Tell us about your new release.
My new EP ‘Closer’ features three tracks of quite varying styles. I composed and produced ‘Moment’ and ‘Future’ during a pivotal phase of realising that restricting myself to one specific style or genre is just not going to work for me. These two tracks especially have quite contrasting energies to them, which I really wanted to showcase under the one umbrella. The first track of the EP, ‘Closer’, was one that I wrote a couple of years ago, and had remained a favourite of mine. I was so excited to release this, and found that it had tied Moment and Future together nicely to form the EP.
In essence, the EP sort of represents a crossroads, and I intend to take all paths.
What inspires your lyrics?
As I’m not a lyricist myself, I particularly enjoy the vocalist getting a good feel for the track themselves and allowing their own interpretation of the track to inspire them. This way, the best version of their sound shine through. Other times, and most recently, I have a particular motive for the track and like to find vocals that fit the vibe.
How do you hope listeners will feel after hearing your music?
I love the idea of my music suiting both relaxing and energetic environments. Being able to listen to it while chilling on the sofa, vibing to it during a late night drive or dancing to it in the club or at a beach party. Essentially though, I want them to feel the same as how I felt while writing it – if it’s an emotional track then I want them to feel that emotion as I have while composing it and listening back to it.
Do you have any upcoming tour dates?
2025 is going to be the year for gigs, for sure. I’ll be buzzing to play out as much as possible – so stay tuned!
What are you working on next?
I have a few more tracks already in the works for release, including more unique and emotive EDM, pure vocal liquid drum & bass, and collaborations are also going on. There are two in particular I’m really looking forward to you guys hearing, so once again, keep an eye (and ear) out!
