Nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, The Garland is a mid-century modern gem that offers a unique and nostalgic stay. With a fascinating backstory involving Kurt Cobain’s legendary escape from rehab, the hotel exudes a 70s aesthetic that just feels really cool.
We arrived late on a Friday evening, and the bar was buzzing, lots of people and laughter, not your usual hotel. bar. The hotel’s layout spans several buildings, creating a village-like atmosphere that feels both secure and secluded, despite its proximity to a busy road.
The centrepiece of the property is a gorgeous terrace featuring a soothing water feature, and a great menu of authentic street food dishes including tacos, elote, and bacon-wrapped hot dogs. The swimming pool is just a stones throw away and though compact, boasts a jacuzzi and ample sun loungers, easy access to towels and importantly, access to the bar without having to traipse through the lobby.
Our room continued the hotel’s retro theme, with geometric patterns and bold orange accents. The king-sized bed was exceptionally comfortable, both of us slept really well despite the jet lag. However, a minor drawback with the room was the desk chair, it didn’t really fit in the space provided and that led to it being kicked several times.
For those seeking an alternative to generic chain hotel experiences, The Garland offers a refreshing and characterful option.
