Comic Sydney May has won the Komedia New Comedy Award 2025.
The contest, in association with Comic Boom comedy club and journalist Victoria Nangle, is in its fourth year and has a great track record for picking up and coming comic stars.
Sydney May, who was born blind, delighted the judges with her powerful stage presence and unique and hilarious perspective on life.
Runners up in the final were Aiden Lonergan and Wes Defoe. Also making the final were Rachel Quinn, Prateek Kohli, Donna Williams, Emma Cohen, Stanley MacDonald and Eli Heart.
Awards co-founder Victoria Nangle said: “That was incredible. Everyone was strong on the Grand Final bill and did themselves proud, and I’m utterly chuffed that Brighton act Sydney May knocked it out of the park – comedically speaking – to scoop the top win.”
Jill Edwards of Comic Boom comedy club said, “I was delighted with the variety of exciting fresh new comic voices in the Final, which is exactly what I’m looking for with Comic Boom. You’ll be seeing Sydney May performing there soon.”
Past winners of the award have been Andrew Fox, Michael Akadiri and Sam Williams.
The aim of the Komedia New Comedy Award is to discover and support exciting new comics, and to offer opportunities for development.
The award is open every year to comedians who have been gigging regularly for less than three years and have not won any major comedy competitions. They must have seven minutes of their own stand-up material, plus a clip they can send to judges.
