Edfringe Comedy Review: Ashley Gavin: My Therapist Is Dying

Ashley Gavin

mc hammersmith

Ashley Gavin’s new comedy routine takes a more serious tone than what her audience are used to. Gavin gives her fans a peak behind the curtain of her personal life and struggles, garnering a new found respect from fans and newcomers alike.

Gavin opens by prefacing that she was always meant to be the way that she is, she comes from a long line of cunts. Gavin is in therapy from a young age with a man named Fred, who she remains with for 28 years until he is diagnosed with cancer. Since her dad’s death as a preteen, Fred has had a hand in raising Gavin even when her own mother couldn’t.

Due to Gavin believing that she isn’t well adjusted or just “fucked up”, she creates a theory based on the personalities of her cats that everyone in the world is either a Fulton or a Fletcher. Fulton is a well adjusted cat who was raised without issue and thrives on independence, while Fletcher was found as a stray and has attachment issues. The show follows Gavin’s life as a Fletcher attempting to become a Fulton step by step.

Throughout this show Gavin gives a fresh take on her usual online persona, by becoming more vulnerable with her audience, as well as having an awkward humour that works in her favour. Not only does Gavin make the audience laugh out loud, but she is able to give sound advice that she draws on from her own experiences of grief and mental health, saying nothing happens for a reason and how you feel now will never be a forever feeling.
