am/pm is a storytelling show by Johnny White Really-Really as he through the life of a receptionist, mainly narratives around their boss.
White’s humour is dry and deadpan. It is unique to him, and I have not seen anything like it before. The hour is a flow of anecdotes, that develop through the show. It is very well rehearsed, but White adds in new bits such as flicking his drink as he speaks.
The comedian conjures up his own little world, joking about mundane things that matter to him or this character, like closing and shutting blinds.
I can imagine that White would be a great writer, and there is plenty of narrative throughout his jokes. His set is carefully crafted and articulate, it is almost too clever.
There is no doubt that the audience are laughing with White as he creates this awkward persona. He is soft spoken, reminding me of an audio book or sleep story. He is shy but confident in his act and comes across as a lovely person.
Maybe the humour is mostly in his delivery, but most of the jokes fly over my head, perhaps because of his style. The jokes consist of a long rumble, so maybe they are too clever and complex when it comes to the punchline, but he seems to keep his audience happy.
The show ends in a cyclical structure, adding to the tedious life of a receptionist and creating a satisfying finale.
