Navigating the live music scene is difficult enough in this day and age, so imagine being an up-and-coming bard in the medieval times! We follow the story of Hannah and Harris as they journey across the Isle of Kinrar to play just one song at a festival, with there being many obstacles in their way, all orchestrated by one man: our titular bogle – Archie the charms salesman, who takes the shape of many characters throughout the show. There is a lot on offer here: great musical numbers, well-written and well-timed punchlines and a genuinely fun plot are put together in a way everyone can enjoy.
We begin immediately with the introduction of the Isle’s map, one of the recurring plot points in the show, which seems to keep throwing the pair off-track and leaving them in dangerous situations with various shady figures. All these characters are great fun, but Sir Duncan The Dense, the Isle’s knight, is a highlight. He tells the story of how he came to be given his title and knight status, explaining how he “slew” hundreds of rabbits, otherwise known as “the evil,” saving the population and prompting an island-wide “huzzah!” Every performer plays their roles perfectly, the acting on display is superb while the cast involved in the transitions between scenes provide great comic relief.
With great storytelling, comedy and musicianship throughout, About a Bogle provides a show full of non-stop fun. Wrapping up with a feel-good ending, it’s impossible to leave the venue in a good mood, so strap in for an hour of compelling storytelling, and don’t forget to pack your lucky sock…
