Susie McCabe walks onto the stage like she owns the place, and within minutes, there is no doubt that she does; the screams and applause from her fellow Scottish audience are profound. Coming of Rage is a gloriously unfiltered hour, packed with big laughs and a performer who seems incapable of keeping her biggest insecurities to herself.
McCabe’s stories leap from the collapse of her marriage to online dating, religion and generational politics, but somehow never feel disjointed. She has a knack for making every detour feel like part of the show. The standout is McCabe, the lesbian, arranging her father’s Roman Catholic funeral. Grief is still sitting underneath the story, but McCabe manages to flip the idea on its head to turn mourning into an itemised bill.
Even when a very drunk audience member attempts to become an unofficial second performer, McCabe barely breaks stride, turning the disruption into another laugh. This show will appeal to everyone at the fringe, and to the internationals, a time to learn about our deep Scottish heritage.
Susie McCabe: Coming of Rage, 20:45 at Gordon Aikman Theatre at Assembly George Square at 8:45pm from August 5-16th – 18-30th
