Sugarcoated Sisters: Bittersweet

The Sugarcoated Sisters’ Fringe debut is one of the most talented, creative and hilarious performances of musical comedy you will see at the festival this year.

Sisters on stage, as well as sisters by birth, Chloe and Tabby are using their musical abilities and quick wit to tackle some of life’s biggest challenges; love, illness and seriously creepy guys.

“Bittersweet” takes comedy back to its core principles, challenging authority, challenging institutions, challenging “the system”, but doing it in a way in which you aren’t feeling crushed by the weight of it all, but rather choking on your pint from laughter.

Chloe and Tabby have both dealt with relationship problems, and have had firsthand experience of dating toxic men, crazy men and everything in between. Feminism is a key part of the show, specifically about being women in the comedy industry, and they have armed themselves with instruments to guide the audience through their battles with whingy, entitled, dating app era men.

The pair play guitar and double bass, and the musical quality of the songs is faultless. Each musical number matches the tone and style of the jokes and lyrics layered over the top. The material is varied, whilst staying on track with the key message, the comedic timing is perfect and the connection between the two gives credibility to their insane, yet painfully true, stories.

The Sugarcoated Sisters have announced themselves at the Fringe with an incredibly unique and entertaining show. Confidence is hard to come by for festival debutants, but the two are clearly close friends as well as sisters, and the main point of the show is clearly important to them. But most importantly, it is clear to see they truly enjoy performing, and that makes for a performance that any audience at the Fringe would love. An absolute must-see at the festival this year.
