Lily Phillips: Smut

Lily Phillips: Smut

Lily Phillips bares all in her debut stand up hour and it does not disappoint. She is not aiming to change the world or make a profound political statement; she just wants to tell some very funny jokes about her vagina. It’s a sidesplittingly comical Fringe show, but maybe leave grandma at home for this one.

Phillips oozes confidence as she talks about her close relationship with her boyfriend and even tighter relationship with her free-spirited cocker spaniel. The two have an instinctive bond that only girls can, but their shared genital issues are absolutely hilarious for everyone in attendance.

Her content isn’t exclusively about her privates, she explores the big problems like pooping and body hair. And even if the material isn’t necessarily all Phillip’s own experiences, her way of delivering the jokes is brilliant and almost reminiscent of ‘Russell Howard’s Good News’. This also doesn’t mean that Phillips is free of her own embarrassing mishaps to tell you. She isn’t afraid to let the audience into her life’s strangest moments and instead of feeling bad for her, you cannot help but laugh. She is charming and witty, always throwing the audience off-course with her snappy punchlines.

What I didn’t expect from ‘Smut’ is the amount of animal kingdom sex facts I’d leave the venue with. These are as unbelievable as they are ludicrously amusing, I’m just not sure I’ll ever be comfortable going in the sea again. Phillips also details her many previous jobs which have led to mixed levels of objectification. But as the stout feminist she is, Phillips laughs at the problem before skilfully dismantling the idiots who were ever weird to her.

Her set is fast-paced and rammed with hilariously lowbrow content. This comedian is definitely one to keep tabs on.
