Marking the first acting role in three years and first directorial gig in 25 years, Johnny Depp is back working on two films since the Amber Heard Trial.
After his ex-wife Amber Heard accused him of domestic violence, Depp was dropped from both of his most successful franchise films in recent years, Pirates of the Caribbean and Fantastic Beasts. But since winning the lengthy court case in which he sued Heard for defamation, Depp is now back in the new role of King Louis XV in the upcoming historical drama Jeanne Du Barry.
As well as this actorial role, Depp announced today that he will undertake another project, this time as director. He will direct a film about Italien artist Amedeo Modigliani and co-produce it alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi. Al Pacino previously tried and failed to get a Modigliani biopic directed by Martin Scorsese to screens.
“The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored and truly humbled to bring to the screen,” Depp revealed in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter.
“It was a life of great hardship but eventual triumph — a universally human story all viewers can identify with.”
While we wait for the production of the film which is reportedly set to begin in Europe in the spring of 2023, Why Not Productions released a first look image of Depp as King Louis XV.
Already filmed in late July, French director Maïwenn’s historical love story Jeanne du Barry will be Depp’s first feature film in three years.
