“Faster Horses” is primarily an insight into the lockdown life of Sunil Patel, who spent it alone in his minimalistic flat. He thought his comedy career was over, and so he decided to come up with some new ideas of what he could do with his life. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, he had no one to workshop his ideas with, so they are completely mad.

In order to form these ideas, he has drawn on his experiences, mainly from the many, many jobs he’s had. Despite having a career across a multitude of professions, he does not seem to have had any job you would have done yourself, some of them you have probably never even heard of. But now he’s back to doing standup, which is good for his audiences, because his charm and wit is magnetic. It’s been good for him too, because now he doesn’t have to rely on his questionable business ideas.

Sunil Patel’s standup routine is immensely entertaining and he has some fantastic stories to tell, somed completely unbelievable, others bizarrely horrifying. He clearly loves being on stage and often can’t get through a story without laughing, which is what audiences want to see, a comic who has as much fun as they try to evoke from their audience. The title of his show implies that he is simply trying to improve what is already out there as opposed to reinventing comedy. He could perhaps set himself a loftier goal, but he is perfectly good at what he does, “if it ain’t broke” as they say.

Towards the end of the show, he begins talking about one of his many ideas that could in fact become a reality. See if you can guess which one, it might surprise you.

Sunil Patel: Faster Horses, 13:55, Monkey Barrel, August 16-28.
