We all have met or have yet to meet the people in our lives that we were destined to connect with, against all odds. Despite international borders and a devout subscription to two opposing religions with an Abrahamic strife so lethal, Salma Hindy and Daniel Deluty’s star crossed relationship was forged. One love story born out of two 9/11 jokes on 9/11, the gal pals called it fate and never looked back since. Soon after, they figured out the jokes were just the precipice of the similarities they shared.
The two-women show narrates the intersections of their past lives as young girls on route to becoming obedient religious women. From Daddy to Mommy issues, forbidden dancing and the same old misogyny in different packages, the ladies were pushed to the point of abandoning their faiths. Salma left her Hijab behind, and Deluty never went back to Jewish camp.
In post-faith AD, they take you through the first naughty encounters with boys and in their last moments of purity. As the pair cheer each other on, recalling spitting out restriction and tasting new freedoms for the first time, you can’t help but feel the warmth radiating off the stage. They don’t necessarily merge into a singular entity or a synchronic, well-oiled machine, but it still feels put together. Both very different in energy, they yin yang through the act, which could be both a strength and an obstacle. With a few more runs, I reckon the show will begin to flow its way to cohesion.
This show speaks to the healing powers that female friendships with inscrutable bonds have. Something tells me the faith in their shared destiny won’t ever waver.
