Thankfully the title of this show doesn’t inspire a hard and fast rule for dictating entrance to the show. Munters could indeed make our way into the show and enjoy what we can in this hour of high brow humour.
The set is a typical stand up act that does the job quite well. Burt Williamson introduces himself through his personal struggles with his eyesight and his bad luck with “babes”. The self-deprecation combined with a chill demeanour shows his comfortability on stage.
Though a cis white man, he is unphased by touching on topics that cis white men typically either completely avoid or face backlash for not avoiding (as a majority of brash insights are rather unwelcome). But somehow, the comedian navigates his thoughts on touchy matters with tact, providing his perspective (that requires big brain thinking) to extract the humour in them. From his thoughts on diversity casting in film, LGBTQ+ representation in advertisements to curious happenings on the global scale the comedian’s dry, slightly smug-but-acceptably-so wit makes seeing the world through his eyes joyfully entertaining.
Obviously impromptu moments prove the comedian’s ability to keep the laughs rolling no matter what. It’s a tough task to bring the energy up at three pm in the afternoon, but Williamson plays with the cards he’s dealt. Unfortunately I was picked from the crowd and asked how many semis I had seen in my life, and despite the embarrassment I do admit this show was not semi-fledged. It was a full-on hour of solid stand up that leaves you regretless. As you only pay what you can, I can’t stress enough how much talent there is that doesn’t threaten your financial stability. This set is well worth it, and I think you’ll find you won’t regret giving it a chance.
