Circus Abyssinia has announced their return to Brighton Fringe this year with the show ‘Tulu’. They’ll be performing at the exciting new space Caravanserai for 13 shows between 22nd May and 4th June.
The show follows the story of a distance runner and Ethiopian legend, Derartu Tulu, as she goes from humble beginnings to become the first African woman to win an Olympic gold.
‘Tulu’ features two Ethiopian brothers Bibi and Bichu Tesfamariam, whose story began over two decades ago, through a shared childhood dream of joining the circus. They wanted to be on the stage for as long as they can remember, but it was when they saw the circus on TV that their dream became determined. They grew up driven by a joint fascination of circus magic, acrobatic mastery and glamorous illusions achieved by the talented figures in the ring, inspired by a hope that one day they could join them.
Their dream became a reality and they have since had numerous credits since moving to the UK that include CBeebies’ ‘Justin’s House’, ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway ‘the avant-garde experiments of Gandini Juggling, the stunning and the Olivier-Award-winning English National Opera production of Akhnetan. They have juggled in thousands of shows in dozens of countries, worked with some truly amazing artists and companies, and participated in some of the most vibrant and challenging tours and festivals in the world, including the Millennium Dome celebrations in London, and the Fuji Rock festival in Japan. They have also broken world records along the way.
