Jodie Mitchell: Becoming John Travulva – Review

Jodie Mitchell tells the story of one of the most traumatic and interesting days of their life. Through their drag King character John Travulva the story comes to life as we learn of Jodie’s family and school life and how they got to where they are now. However the real focus of the show is a tiring double gig day and coming home to their apartment to discover there is someone lurking there who shouldn’t be.

Mitchell has perfectly created this show and it has the audience in bits for much of the show as they go from Jodie to John through clever storytelling techniques and props. It’s incredible how easily Mitchell can switch from character to character not even just themselves to John, even at the beginning playing a gay God, which is one of the most hilarious moments of the show.

Mitchell speaks of their difficulties growing up in a catholic family and how that’s impacted them whilst also using their daddy issues to create hilarious segments of the show and eventually using the trauma of their absent father to end the show in a brilliant and extravagant way.

The show is all building up around their encounter with a very dodgy character and when we get to the real juicy part of the story it’s almost unbelievable. Mitchell’s ability to tell this story with such realism and comedic timing is just brilliant especially because it must have been quite a traumatic experience at the time.

Mitchell has made such a exceptional show combining so many different elements to make a well rounded show that shows off all their brilliance and entertains the audience from start to finish.
