Stepping into the venue at Summerhall the audience is met with the sounds of crashing waves and pesky seagulls as we are transported to the sunny seaside.
The show follows Chris and Christine a well-known mother and son family duo. But we soon learn that Christine is refusing to perform, so Chris must take on the tough task of carrying on the show without her.
Olly Gully performs the role of Chris with so much camp exciting energy throughout. He doesn’t drop his energy for a single moment and creates a magical air in the room. His performance is done with such passion and he carries himself with such confidence and vibrance.
Gully’s jokes are delivered perfectly. The audience in uproarious laughter joke after joke. The different segments and skits throughout this seaside themed show help to keep the audience engaged and work to show a sharp contrast between the seaside comedy show and the relationship between Chris and Christine.
The relationship between Chris and his mother is quite telling of how many mothers are treated by their children especially when they are still growing up. She always helps her son when he’s struggling but the same is not done for her in return. Chris uses a huge level of toxic positivity to keep Christine’s thoughts at bay, so he doesn’t have to deal with the realities of their life. The way the character of Christine is portrayed throughout the show is wonderfully smart and keeps the audience on their toes, wondering when all will be revealed.
A fantastic, fun and at times sad and heart wrenching show.
