Shamilton! The Improvised Hip Hop Musical – Review

Brilliant from start to finish, this wonderful cast manages to create a hilarious and extremely impressive show.

Loosely based on Hamilton, this improv show aims to create a hip-hop musical on a character of the audiences choosing, in the past few weeks they have had people from Barbie to Boris Johnson. My audience after much debate ended up voting for Michelle Obama.

What a treat to be in the presence of such a tremendously talented improv cast alongside their impressive vocal talented and band who also have to improv the whole way through to help move the story alongside the actors.

Raquel Palmas takes on the titular role of Michelle. Starting off the show just like Hamilton, Palmas then haw to lead her cast through a hilariously funny series of improv songs and scenes – including the story of her meeting Barak, bringing healthy meals to school lunchrooms and couples therapy led by Bernie Saunders. Obviously this show isn’t completely accurate but they do a pretty good job of covering all bases in the time that they have. Palmas talent is even more impressive as I learned she only got off her plane to Edinburgh that morning!

I’m always impressed by a good piece of improv especially musical theatre but this is an astounding show – to be able to come up with a rap so quickly is so incredibly difficult and their brains are working at the speed of light to come up with some of these incredible lines.

Promising a new show every single day with a interchanging cast – this is a must see show. The cast is incredibly talented and whatever story they come up with is bound to be lots of fun.
