Sooz Kempner: Y2K Woman – Review

The audience is transported back in time to the 90s, on the cusp of the new millennium as Sooz Kempner tells tales from her teenage years.

With charm and wit, Kempner hits the audience with waves of nostalgia as she remembers her 15 year-old self and the serious struggles she was facing. Heartache, sexual awakenings, and a lack of boobs to name a few.

Immediately we are reminded of Kempner’s experience in comedy. As latecomers enter she welcomes them, has a go at them as you might expect and quickly got back to her set without missing a beat. This is Kempner’s ninth fringe solo show and her show is proof of the seasoned professional that she is.

Carefully curated with different uses of multimedia, we get visual and audio cue bound to give any millennial a jump scare. With links to then and now, it keeps the show relevant for the present day and even if you weren’t around in the 90’s you can enjoy the laughs and share in her teenage mishaps.

Kempner is a real joy to spend an hour with, she has such a natural story-telling capability and the audience is compelled by her every word. Thanks to Tony Blair himself Kempner also has a crazy good singing ability, a exceptional vocal talent and her impressions compliment her stories and comedy beautifully.

This unforgettable show is a great mix of throwbacks, laughs and analysis of UK culture then and now. Hitting the nail on the head at every turn. Kempner exceeds expectations.
