Josh Thomas is the creator of the fabulous TV series Please Like Me and Everything’s Gonna Be Okay. He’s started doing stand up when he was seventeen.
Tell us about your show. Why should we go and see it?
Oh gosh. Im not really sure people should but then what’s the point of doing this marketing QandA if I’m not gonna tell people to go. Its about one time two years ago when I had to tidy the house… and about this psychiatrist who told me I was ‘incurable’ and also a love story. I do a dance which people really were excited about in the usa but British people just sit there a bit unsure and quiet – which I respect. I feel the same way.
What makes you laugh?
My friends telling me a story over brunch about times they humiliated themselves.
What three words best describe your performance style – and why?
Ughhh. Umm. It’s all like soft but then a but cunty and I wear nice shirts.
Do you have nerves about going on stage and how do you cope with them.
Not these days – these days I just think it’ll be fun. If I did have some I need to deal with I would use alcohol – of course. Why break with tradition.
What’s your idea of a perfect Fringe feast and where will you eat it?
Yesterday I went to a restaurant that only sold cheese plates and was too awkward to leave and ordered a cheese plate (for two people because that’s all they had) and it was humiliating but also the best time of my life.
How will your audience think/feel differently after an hour in your company?
Sometimes they’re surprised when I’m quite shy but generally people are astounded how me I am still.
When did you first realise you were born to be on stage?
I started stand up when I was 17 because social interactions were going so poorly and I was excited for an opportunity to socialize in a structured environment with rules where the people I’m talking to are sitting in the audience not ruining our conversation by talking.
Why do you think Edinburgh Fringe is so important to performers and artists around the world?
Its just good fun isn’t it. People get so serious about it but it’s just supposed to be silly and fun.
How do you plan to relax and enjoy the city when you’re not performing.
Grindr.
Who is your showbiz idol and why.
Ewwww I don’t idolize people in show biz they are all trash. No offence. I idolize people who know how to make an excel spreadsheet. Now that’s magic.
What is your idea of a perfect Fringe moment?
Stumbling onto a show that’s weird and perfect or also not drinking so much that I’m hungover.
