Edfringe Comedy Review: Barry Ferns: My Seven Years as Lionel Richie

Barry Ferns takes storytelling to the next level with his new show.

Ferns, formally known as Lionel Richie for seven years, commands the room at Just The Tonic as he tells stories of his previous Fringe shows and origin story as a comedian.

Ferns guides you through the highs and lows of his life so far, from being bankrupt one week to being offered £500,000 the next.

He provides the audience with a newfound level of sympathy for comedians, as he reveals the stunning unreliability and costs of the job.

Paired with a PowerPoint presentation, Ferns is a natural as he breezes through the crazy things he has done for comedy, like creating websites or holding a show on Arthur’s Seat and even changing his name.

The name of the show proves the lengths to which Ferns would go to for the arts. Ferns clearly has a lot of love for his career, adding a section at the end to encourage the audience to go to new shows and give them a chance.

The show itself is very well structured, with reoccurring jokes that make the audience laugh every time.

Ferns is fantastically funny as he delivers a strong and surprisingly thought-provoking show. He accomplishes great things within the hour, it seems his many years of Fringe shows have paid off.
