Seymour Mace Does Things With Stuff is a bit silly but also sincere. He uses absurd disjointed comedy to touch on everyday issues that people can relate to – mental health, creativity and caring what others think.
Using homemade props as the backdrop for his jokes, the brunt of Seymour’s unique comedy comes from the absurdity of what’s on show. The disjointedness works both for and against the routine. You have no idea what’s coming next as he fumbles between props and explains how and why he made each contraption.
I think Seymour has made comedy for himself, which means every sketch is somewhat endearing even if they don’t all hit. They all feel personal, and he will give often profound thoughts on a topic which will then be contrasted by a bit of silliness – his other dimension alarm clock sketch being a key example. Some feel drawn out – especially what was essentially an arts and craft segment involving the whole audience. On that note, there’s no escaping audience participation in the intimate Stand 2 with everyone encouraged to get involved at several points.
Seymour’s style is unapologetically unique and his brand of comedy is certainly niche enough to stand out.
