The venue of Palais du Variété in George Square Garden helps set the scene for Circus The Show. The big top along with the costumes, props and overall production creates an immersive experience from start to finish, and although aimed for children – there is enough here to keep the whole family entertained. Thanks to a blend of magic, acrobatics, stunts and slapstick comedy, the hour-long performance flies by.
The show starts as you take your seat with ‘the clown’ engaging the audience in the manner of Charlie Chaplin’s Tramp. From here, the show really begins with ‘the Ringmaster’ taking us through seven different acts – all of which captivates their intended audience – who were literally off their seat for the duration.
The cast’s high energy is matched from the crowd, start to finish with the acrobatics and magic tricks being particular highlights. However, it is the clown who is the real star of the show, and it is deservedly earned through their frequent audience interaction and antics (literally) off-stage.
An unexpected narrative arc is revealed with the final performance, ending on a surprisingly heart-warming message to leave with the audience. There is also the chance to buy merch and take photos with the performers which judging by the line, many were eager to do, to have a souvenir of what they experienced.
If you are looking to keep the kids entertained for an hour, then this is a must-see at this year’s Fringe. Photography is also strongly encouraged so there should be plenty out there on social media if you are still undecided on what to expect.
Circus The Show, 14.50, Assembly George Square Gardens (Palais du Variété), until Aug 25 (not 18th)
