10 Last Minute Things You Can Still Do to Feel Christmassy (Even If You’re Totally Unprepared)

Bare tree branches wrapped in colourful fairy lights glowing against a dark night sky.

So it’s the Monday before Christmas, and all through the house, the tree’s up (just), the wrapping’s pending, and the to-do list is… long.

If you’re wondering how we got here so fast, then this one’s for you.

Why a Guided Tour of Seville Cathedral Is Worth It

The good news? You don’t need matching pyjamas or a colour-coded food plan to feel Christmassy. You just need a few small tweaks to switch your brain into festive mode.

Here are 10 last-minute Christmas ideas to help you feel festive, even if you’re totally unprepared.

1. Put One Playlist On and Let It Carry You

Whether it’s Michael Bublé, Nat King Cole, or something slightly off-piste, put it on and leave it on. Let the music (like this playlist here) do most of the heavy lifting.

2. Turn the Lights Off (Yes, Really)

Christmas lights work best when everything else is dim. Switch off the big light, turn on lamps or fairy lights, and suddenly everything feels calmer and Christmas-cosy.

3. Go for a ‘Purposefully Festive’ Walk

Not a power walk to burn off that extra mince pie (or three), and not a panicked, caffeine-infused errand walk. A slow walk, ideally past houses with festive decorations, or just other people clearly also killing time before Christmas.

4. Watch a Film You’ve Seen Before

This is not the week for “critically acclaimed but emotionally demanding”. Choose something comforting and predictable. If you can scroll your phone during it, you’ve chosen correctly.

5. Buy One Nice Thing Just for You

A festive candle or a fancy hot chocolate, the choice is yours. Pick one small indulgence you wouldn’t normally buy – something that makes this week feel extra special.

6. Lower the Bar (Radically)

You don’t need to feel magical, grateful, or full of cheer at all times. Feeling ‘fine’ is more than enough.

7. Do One Tiny Tradition

Not all of them. Just one! A certain mug, or even a phone call you always make. Traditions only work when they’re simple.

8. Stop Comparing Your Christmas to Anyone Else’s

Especially not the internet’s. No one posts the stress, the rows, or the awkward silences; only the highlights and things they want you to see.

9. Eat Something That Tastes Like Christmas to You

Ignore what you “should” be eating. If it reminds you of Christmas, it counts!

10. Remember: This Is Only a Few Days

If this year feels quieter, messier, or less sparkly than expected, that’s okay. Sometimes Christmas is less about the magic and more about letting yourself off the hook.
