James Michael Tyler, known for his role as the coffee shop manager Gunther on the ‘Friends,’ died this past Sunday peacefully at his home at the age of 59. His representative Toni Benson gave a statement to the press.
“The world knew him as Gunther (the seventh “Friend”), from the hit series Friends, but Michael’s loved ones knew him as an actor, musician, cancer-awareness advocate, and loving husband.”
Tyler passed away after his battle with prostate cancer which he was fist diagnosed with in 2018 said Benson.
“Michael loved live music, cheering on his Clemson Tigers, and would often find himself in fun and unplanned adventures. If you met him once you made a friend for life,” Bensons statement noted in remembrance of Tyler.
The actor was best known for playing Gunther, the manager of Central Perk on ‘Friends’ but he was also in many other shows like “Scrubs,” “Modern Music,” and “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.”
James Michael Tyler is being remembered and celebrated by many over the past twenty four hours including statements form ‘Friends’ co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, Warner Bros and his fellow actors. Jennifer Anniston took to instagram this morning to honour and acknowledge Tyler and what he meant to her and the entire ‘Friends’ production.
Tyler appeared in 150 episodes of “Friends” over the course of its 10-year run and is beloved by the show’s fan base. He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Carno and will not soon be forgotten by his loved ones or fans.
