Brennan Reece takes to the stage in a cavernous hall to spin his tale of showbiz disappointment. He wants everyone to know that he was just sacked from his dream job, but he’s not dwelling on it – definitely not; he just wants to make it the crux of his new comedy hour. There is something quite bitter about it, which could have left you rolling your eyes, but he plays into his character well, and his material can leave you in stitches. You can’t joke about anything, you have to be so careful, he tells us, as we watch him joke about a whole host of subjects.
He rarely strays from the low-hanging comedic fruit, which works when he accentuates his playful side, but when its strays into simple playground name-calling and vulgarity, it becomes somewhat difficult to stomach. He jokes and jives through some crowd work and attempts some affability and tenderness, but it feels slightly out of place considering the tone of most of his material.
He regains his footing and towards the end shifts gear and tries to elicit some sympathy from the crowd but, again, it feels slightly out of rhythm with the rest of his material. Brennan Reece has put together an, at times, absurdly funny show, but there feels to be some element missing, something crucial just not quite clicking.
