Music: Lucy Frost: I Will Sit For Hours Obsessing Over an Idea

Boston native singer songwriter Lucy Frost has released a new single ‘To Pieces’, which is all about the vulnerability that comes with falling in love. It is a song, she says, which “just fell perfectly into place while writing it.’

A multi-instrumentalist her songs are an evocative blend of dark pop and indie. She tells Entertainment Now about her career so far…

How did your musical project first start? Is there a story to tell about it?

I’ve played keys and sang in bands my whole life, and I’ve always written songs on the side, but it wasn’t until 2022 that I really started leaning into my own solo project. That’s when I realized my repertoire of songs I’d been building up had value and purpose, and since then I’ve been super dedicated to cementing my own unique sound.

What was your first gig?

My first solo gig was at the Village Social Club in Brooklyn, MA.

What three words best describe your musical style and why?

I’d say definitely edgy; I’ve recently fallen in love with this muted, dark tone on the guitar that has been an inspiration for most of my new music. I remain in the pop/folk sound, but strive to incorporate the dark-western feel of Jesse Jo Stark and the 90’s edge of Hole. Next, I’d say it’s very lyric-driven; I’ve been composing music as an instrumentalist since I was eight, never really considered myself to be a singer, so to me, songwriting has to emphasise the power of storytelling in a piece of music. I will sit for hours obsessing over a clever idea, or relishing in a new word never used before in order to paint a picture visually for the audience. Lastly, I’d describe my music as personal/relatable. I look to music to help me break down my thoughts, much like a diary, so there’s no question as to why each song is a personal reflection of my own intimate experiences. But what I really love is writing something that other people can relate to, something that makes them want to scream the lyrics out loud in the car because it triggers this gut wrenching feeling inside. I want to be able to keep creating stories that others can make their own and hold on to when they need it most, just like I have.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

I’ve always been a classic rock girl; I love Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley, Rolling Stones. I’m also very heavily influenced by pop and alt/pop artists like Billie Eilish, Role Model, Suki Waterhouse, Jesse Jo Stark, Gracie Abrams and Lola Young.

Tell us about your new release.

‘To Pieces’ is the kind of song that’ll get stuck in your head immediately. It’s catchy and simple and uses generic rhyme schemes, but the melodies and core message are what makes it gut-wrenching and relatable. For me, it’s about falling for someone you know is the right kind of wrong for you, whether it’s bad timing or you just know they’ll break your heart down the road. Making this track with Nick Schmidt was so fun, we really just clicked with the ideas immediately.

What inspires your lyrics?

Like I said before, many of my own personal relationships as well as witnessing friends’ experiences have inspired me. But sometimes there’s just one line or even one word that comes to mind and I’ll end up building a whole world from that one gripping lyric, eventually morphing it into something I can relate to.

Do you have any upcoming tour dates?

As of now I do not, but hopefully this upcoming year I will have some new gigs to grow my audience in LA and just get back into the swing of performing live. Will keep you updated!

What are you working on next?

I’m currently sitting on over 10 songs, many of which are ready to release soon. So over the next couple of months, I will be sharing consistently with you all as well as working with my lovely director, Camila Florez to create even more stunning visuals to go with the music!
