As the third wife of Chairman Mao, Jiang Qing was a notorious member of the Gang of Four – playing a major role in the Cultural Revolution – a time of destruction and chaos in Chinese History.
Shanghai Dolls by Chinese Hong Kong playwright Amy Ng begins when Jiang Qing is a struggling actress in Shanghai and becomes friends with Sun Weishi – who would go on to become the first female theatre director in China.
This is the true story of two of the most influential women in Chinese history a cultural martyr and a cultural oppressor and will open in April at the Kiln Theatre in London in association with Paines Plough.
Shanghai Dolls stars Gabby Wong in the role of Jiang Qing and Millicent Wong as Sun Weishi. The production will be directed by joint artistic director of Paines Plough Katie Posner and will run from April 3 – May 10.
