Describing himself as a magician-scientist hybrid, Kevin Quantum spends an hour performing ‘unbelievable’ magic designed to convert ‘non-believers’.

Kevin is a charismatic performer who reels the audience in, promising to make you believe (if you don’t already!) through his jokes, stories and impressive magic tricks. He attempts to convince the audience by teaching a trick that each person in the auditorium performs with their own hands – and from there he keeps them captivated for the duration of the show. The illusions may be familiar, but his craftsmanship and showmanship make it feel like you are witnessing them for the first time.

It’s best to sit close to the stage as it can be quite difficult to see Kevin’s slick sleight of hand skills from the back of the 350-seat venue. This is especially frustrating during a clever trick where he turns a ping-pong ball into an egg. I also had to rely on the front row’s reaction as he makes a coin vanish and reappear later in the show.

His take on the infamous ‘three-card monte’ is particularly impressive (thankfully a live video is set up for this), and even if you think you know what’s coming, it is impossible to figure out where and when the magic happens. The illusions escalate as the show progresses, culminating with a surprisingly moving finale that expertly ties back to his earlier reveals.

Kevin Quantum: Unbelievable Magic for Non-Believers, Assembly Rooms (Ballroom), 19.40, until 24 Aug (not 19)
