Monstering the Rocketman is a play about one of the most famous libel cases in British history, Elton John vs The Sun. The action is performed entirely by playwright Henry Naylor himself playing multiple characters.
The story follows a young journalist during his first week at the paper and his fight to make a lasting impression. During the course of the one man play we see how his life is impacted by the case.
The show delves into the work environment and the nature of the press in 1987 with Naylor bringing to life a magazine editor driven by a need to have the best exclusive.
The storytelling in the show is superb.
At times, the story can get a bit repetitive. Perhaps more visual aids in the background or voice overs representing more characters could help.
Some of the humour is lost in the telling but Naylor’s acting is fantastic and helps to keep the energy up throughout the show. He understands how to hold the stage on his own.
