Edfringe Review: World’s Greatest Lover – The New Musical

World’s Greatest Lover takes us back to the good old days of boy bands and synchronised dance routines.

The new musical follows four of the most iconic love interests in history competing to become the World’s Greatest Lover, but what they don’t know is that they must put their differences aside to save love.

The love interests are Marquis de Sade, Casanova, Romeo and Cyrano de Bergerac, with a surprise visit from Saint Valentine. Each has unbelievable voices and are at the top of their craft. There are no weak performers, and their voices blend nicely when singing.

If you’re so lucky to not believe in love, you could be plucked from the audience to live out your dreams and be serenaded on stage.

The songs themselves are good and help the plot go from a to b but are not particularly memorable. They are too wordy and are not catchy enough to stay in my head, which normally happens with other musicals. The actors do the songs justice with their strong vocals, but it is not something I am running to listen to after the show.

World’s Greatest Lover has all the 90s boyband vibes, with heavily practiced and sometimes over the top dance routines, with a different move for a different word in the song. It is all part of the cheesiness of the musical.

The musical is undeniably great fun, even if you’re not a fan of musicals you can still enjoy the spectacle and light-heartedness of it all.
