Magnus D Magnus may not hold a bachelor’s, master’s or a PhD in any scientific field, but he sure knows how to make chemistry exciting while (mostly) skipping past the boring bits. The D stands for Danger, which is very fitting for a show where there are plenty of toxic chemicals, fire, and most importantly, explosions. More than just a mad scientist obsessed with chaotic experiments, Magnus speaks about living with ADHD and encourages the young audience to embrace the way their brain works and to be curious. This is not a classroom, if you have a question you don’t need to put up your hand, just shout your query and it will be answered… perhaps incorrectly but answered, nonetheless.
Elephants’ toothpaste and flaming bubbles are just a couple of things that are on display, with volunteers bravely taking the stage for each of Magnus’ experiments. Audience participation is a big part of the show, kids will be firing the vortex canon at their parents, pouring mysterious, colourful chemicals (dish soap) into boiling water and will take on the role of Magnus’ backup dancers for his musical-style rendition of Tom Lehrer’s periodic table song.
Besides the explosions, colour changing liquids and an excessive amount of foam that seems to appear from nowhere, there is an educational element to the show. The basics of chemical reactions are illustrated in a way that is easy to understand, along with a lot of positive reinforcement for children, proving that it is okay to be inquisitive and express yourself.
