A charming hour of comedy, consisting of stories about growing up in Singapore, language barriers and doing what’s right for you in life. Ting Lim has come a long way to be telling you her story in this karaoke room, and she’s here to explain exactly how it happened. It all began with a tequila infused impulse purchase for a comedy workshop while she was living in Australia, which of course happened to be non-refundable and led to a life-changing moment of self-discovery upon its conclusion.
The majority of the show is a retelling of her family life and relationships in Singapore and Australia, with a few good jokes written in there along with some rewarding punchlines during longer, more heartfelt stories. Some of the content falls flat, but Lim does well to quickly move on before awkward silence ensues. Despite the simple premise and a couple of ropey moments, the show is definitely worth an hour of your afternoon, and the intimate venue makes for a great space to experience the set.
There are some genuinely touching moments in the set, particularly about her mother’s acceptance of her career choices and finally getting out of a dead-end ten year long relationship, but when she reaches the end of these stories, they quickly lose their value with a punchline, which can feel quite anti-climactic. There is great stuff in here and it is worth watching if you have a free afternoon throughout your Fringe binge.
