In his show, Andrew White talks about how he was quite late to come out as gay, compared to others of his generation. So he is performing his first LGBT-based comedy routine with several goals in mind, but the main one, is to become a gay icon.
Growing up in Salisbury, he did not have many opportunities to experience gay culture, or to see accurate portrayals of same-sex relationships. Now he feels as though he has some things to work through in terms of figuring out how to have those relationships, and while it is a long process that takes time, Andrew White believes a standup comedy show makes a good replacement for therapy.
Andrew White has what all good comics need, which is an interesting story. As is apparent in some of his dating horror stories, it’s hard to meet gay men when you live in sleepy, rural areas.
The content of the show touches on some serious issues, in which he talks about how he has tried to involve himself more in the gay community by taking part in activism. However, he admits to something that many people would not, he does not do his homework. The way in which he deals with these issues on stage and the lightheartedness of his jokes makes for a show that tackles tough problems, but will still have you laughing.
