Tell us about your show. Why should we go and see it?
Being my first time performing in Edinburgh, I’ve put together a show with all my best material from the last ten years of performing. Sure – there’s a loose, silly, and pretty damn juvenile narrative arc that brings it all together. But, really, I just wanted to show Edinburgh audiences my best magic from the last 10 years. It’s the work that’s taken me around the world, amassed hundreds of millions of views online, and everything I’m really proud of.
And, if I may brag a little – I showed one of the world’s most famous magicians my opening routine two days ago. He said it’s one of the best pieces of magic he’s seen in the last decade. So feel free to come for the first five minutes and leave after that.
Are you flying solo or are you part of a team?
Just me and my dreams, baby.
What are your hopes and dreams for the Fringe?
To not be sober for a single night. As for the show, anything less than a completely sold out run with only five-star reviews will not be accepted.
What makes you laugh?
Charles Doza, AKA ‘Democracy Manifest’.
What is it that made you a performer?
Persistence, stubbornness, and an unhealthy craving for validation.
How will your audience think/feel differently after an hour in your company?
Honestly, I hope they leave with a greater respect for magic.
Whose show – apart from your own – are you looking forward to seeing at the Edinburgh Fringe?
Ben Hart is one of the few magicians in the world who I enjoy watching. He also looks like a beautiful, handsome alien.
What’s the most useful piece of advice you’ve been given?
Seek criticism, not praise. Us performers love getting told how good we are. It’s our drug. Don’t get me wrong – I love a pat on the back as much as the next narcissist. But looking for just validation and approval is a nasty trap to becoming complacent.
Do you have a favorite Fringe memory?
Red Bastard. His show was utterly transformative. I’ve never seen someone dominate an audience like he (it?) did.
Who is your showbiz/Fringe idol and why.
Simon Coronel & Vyom Sharma – The Manipulators. This was the greatest show to have never been seen.
