Ignacio Lopez’s family tree practically spans the face of the Earth, he is the child of generation after generation of hard-working immigrants, who spent their lives grafting to make a better life for themselves and their families. He’s not sure how thrilled they would be about his career choice, but maybe they should be, because he’s very good at what he does.

“El Cómico” is all about Ignacio’s varied life, from being born in Mallorca and spending his early years there, to living with his mother and father in Wales, whilst his father tried to get a tapas restaurant going in Swansea (spoiler alert – Swansea wasn’t ready for it).

Ignacio Lopez has a lot to say about the UK, as he has lived here for years, and he talks about how some audience members mistake his jokes as being hatred towards British people. He wants to clarify he does not have a problem with British people, but he has a lot of fun making jokes about British people. If you hear his material, you can’t help but laugh, and concede that everything he says is true. He is sarcastic, witty, animated and most importantly, hilarious.

Towards the end of his show, he likes to incorporate his musical talent as a guitarist and songwriter, although “parody songwriter” may be the more appropriate term. The variety of his show, as well as his commitment to it, shows that he gets true enjoyment from his career. He is one of the friendliest comedians you could meet at the festival this year, unless you do not see the funny side to lighthearted digs at certain elements of British culture. And if you can’t, you are missing out on a wonderful show.

Ignacio Lopez: El Cómico, 20:20, Gilded Balloon, August 17-28.
